Traditional Handicrafts in Gamo
The people of SNNPR is remarkably rich with centuries old known handicraft production. Each of the different ethnic group has indigenous knowledge creating diverse traditional handcrafts for various purposes.
The Gamo people speak a language in the Omotic family. They live primarily in the southern region, Many Gamos live in villages near the towns of Chencha and Arba Minch, in the Gamo-Gofa zone, 30 kilometer drive from Arba Minch up to Chencha. Weaving is a primary profession for many Gamoes though the skill is wide spread to different parts of the Region & the country. Weavers produce different cloths for men, women & children. They also are, famous for their huge huts & a classic example of simple architecture, resembling a giant beehive and their hut is about 12 meters height, looking like a beehive. It is constructed with vertical hardwood poles, wove bamboo and has thatched roofs of enset (false-banana). So these huts are constructed with the natural materials of the area. Looking at these huts, you can imagine, that these huts could age 60 years, when immune from termites attack .
