Language groups

Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Regional State is known in the country for its culture and language diversity. It is the only region in Ethiopia where there are more than 50 different languages / above 66 % of the languages in the country/ spoken. The languages belong to four main language groups, Cushitic, Omotic, Semitic and Nilo-Sahara.

The status of the languages in S/N/N/P/R/S/

Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Regional State is one of the nine regional states in Ethiopia. The region is a residential area for 56 nations and nationalities which is 70% of total number of nations and nationalities in the country. Consequently, the region has become the place where more than 50 different languages are spoken. Although the region endowed various living languages, currently these languages are not in equal status. Some of them are beyond speech whereas the others have not yet become written languages. On the other hand, the rest languages are at the brink of death that needs measure of revitalization. In addition, few languages of the region are no longer in existence because of dominance of neighboring languages.
